Not every print is the same
Sponsors, names and numbers on vintage shirts were not produced from a single material. Heat transfers, vinyl, plastisol and different adhesive systems react differently as they age.
A method that works on one shirt may cause irreversible colour loss, surface melting or fabric damage on another.
Adhesive residue and peeling
Adhesive left behind after a print is removed is more than a cosmetic issue. An unsuitable solvent may spread pigment into the fabric, harden fibres or create additional staining.
Peeling applications should not be pressed with uncontrolled high heat. The print surface, carrier layer and bond with the fabric should first be assessed.
Bleeding sponsor prints
Some applications crack or transfer colour into surrounding fabric because of washing, high temperature, friction or previous incorrect treatment. This damage cannot always be fully reversed.
The objective is not always to make a shirt appear new. In some cases, the responsible approach is to stop further deterioration and preserve the remaining original material.
Restoration versus reproduction
Preserving an original print is different from removing it entirely and installing a reproduction. A replacement may restore visual completeness, but it changes the object’s degree of originality.
Every intervention should therefore be documented, assessed for reversibility and judged according to the purpose of the collection.
